The Boeing 737-800 is part of the 737 Next Generation family and has one of the best safety records in commercial aviation. It entered service in 1998 and has accumulated hundreds of millions of flight hours. It is operated by hundreds of airlines and is one of the most thoroughly proven jets ever built.

The 737-800 is the most delivered commercial passenger jet in history with over 4,800 aircraft in service, making it the aircraft you are most likely to fly on when taking a short or medium-haul flight. Airlines like Ryanair, Southwest, and Lion Air have fleets of hundreds of 737-800s.

The 737-800 typically seats 162-189 passengers in a 3-3 economy layout. Ryanair uses a high-density 189-seat configuration, while full-service carriers typically seat 160-175 with more legroom in economy. Business class versions seat fewer passengers.

The 737-800 has a range of approximately 5,765 km, suitable for flights up to 5-6 hours. It handles European intra-continental routes, transatlantic hops to the Canaries, and busy domestic corridors in the US, China, and India.

Exit rows (typically rows 16-17) offer the most legroom. Seats in rows 1-5 are closest to the front, quietest, and allow fastest exit. Window seats in rows 10-18 over the wing offer the smoothest turbulence experience. Avoid rows 30-34 near the rear — louder and seats may not recline.

The 737-800 is moderately noisy by modern standards. The CFM56-7B engines are effective but louder than the new-generation engines on the A320neo or 737 MAX. Front seats are noticeably quieter than rear seats. Overall, noise levels are typical for a short-haul jet.

The A320 has a slightly wider cabin (3.7m vs 3.53m), making economy seats marginally wider. The A320 uses fly-by-wire technology, while the 737-800 uses a more conventional but computerised control system. Both are equally proven and reliable. Passenger experience is very similar.

The 737-800 is an excellent aircraft for nervous flyers. It is extremely reliable, has been flying for over 25 years, and its familiarity means it is very well understood by pilots and maintenance crews. Sitting over the wing gives the most stable experience in turbulence.

Wi-Fi availability depends on the airline. Some carriers like Southwest have Wi-Fi on all their 737-800s, while others like Ryanair do not offer connectivity. Check your airline's website before the flight.

The 737-800 uses a bleed-air cabin air system with HEPA filtration, refreshing cabin air every 2-3 minutes. The system is effective though not as advanced as the 787 or A350. Staying hydrated on flights over 2 hours is important due to low cabin humidity.

The 737-800 typically has 3 toilets: one at the front and two at the rear. On high-density configurations (like Ryanair), the front toilet may be removed, leaving only 2 rear toilets. Queues at the rear can be long on full flights, especially during descent.

The 737-800 has standard-sized overhead bins that are smaller than on modern aircraft. On full flights with budget airlines where many passengers bring maximum-size cabin bags, bins fill up quickly. Boarding early or checking a bag helps avoid this issue.

The 737-800 is operated by virtually every airline in the world. Major operators include Ryanair (largest fleet in Europe), Southwest Airlines, Lion Air, WestJet, Norwegian, TUI, Jet2, and hundreds more. It is the most common single-aisle jet at European, North American, and Asian airports.

The 737-800 is gradually being replaced by the 737 MAX 8, which offers 20% better fuel efficiency and quieter engines. However, the vast existing fleet of 4,800+ aircraft means the 737-800 will remain common in the sky for the next 10-15 years at least.

The 737-800 is adequate for 4-hour flights, though it's not the most spacious aircraft. Budget airline configurations with tight seat pitch can become uncomfortable on longer flights. Choosing an exit row or paying for extra legroom seats makes a significant difference.
