The Bombardier CRJ900 is a regional twin-engine jet that seats up to 90 passengers. It is an extended variant of the CRJ700 and is widely used for short-haul and regional routes throughout North America and Europe. The CRJ900 features a 2-2 seating layout with no middle seat, which makes it one of the more comfortable narrow regional jets despite its small size.

The CRJ family has an excellent safety record and is one of the most widely operated regional jets in the world. It meets all international airworthiness standards and is operated by major airlines under strict maintenance programs. Like all modern jets, it is built to withstand significant structural stress and has highly reliable engines.

The CRJ900 typically seats 76-90 passengers. The standard layout is 2-2 (four across), meaning every passenger has either a window or aisle seat with no middle seat. This is a significant advantage over larger aircraft where middle seats are unavoidable in economy.

The CRJ900 is comfortable for short hops but can feel cramped on flights over 2-2.5 hours. The cabin is narrow (2.57m wide) and the overhead bins are small — many carry-on bags must be gate-checked. The 2-2 seating means no middle seat, and rows 1-10 are reasonably quiet. Taller passengers may find standing difficult due to the low cabin ceiling.

Rows 1-5 are farthest from the rear-mounted engines and are the quietest. Exit row seats provide additional legroom. Avoid the last 5 rows, which are closest to the engines and can be significantly noisier. Window seats over the wing give the smoothest ride in turbulence.

The CRJ900 has rear-mounted engines which makes the front of the cabin very quiet and the rear noticeably louder. On takeoff and climb the rear rows can be quite loud. If you are sensitive to noise, choose seats in the first half of the cabin. At cruise altitude noise levels are generally acceptable throughout.

The overhead bins on the CRJ900 are small and will not fit standard roller carry-on bags upright. Airlines typically gate-check bags at no charge on CRJ aircraft. It is best to pack a small personal item under the seat and plan on gate-checking any roller bag. This process is usually smooth and the bag is returned at the jetway.

The CRJ900 is widely used by regional partners of major US carriers: SkyWest (for United, Delta, American, Alaska), Envoy Air (American), and Mesa Air (United). In Europe it is operated by Lufthansa CityLine, Brussels Airlines, and other regional operators.

The CRJ900 is a proven, reliable aircraft but its small size means turbulence is felt more noticeably than on larger jets. The rear-mounted engines produce an unfamiliar sound on takeoff for passengers used to larger aircraft. Sitting in the front rows helps both with noise and perceived stability. If severe turbulence is a concern, seats over the wing are the most stable.

CRJ900 flights are typically 45 minutes to 2.5 hours. It is primarily a regional connector aircraft linking smaller cities to major hubs. Flying the CRJ is rarely about comfort over long distances — it is about accessing routes that larger aircraft cannot serve economically.

Wi-Fi is not commonly available on CRJ900 aircraft. The short flight durations typically don't justify the installation cost, and most regional operations do not offer connectivity. Occasionally some operators have retrofitted Wi-Fi, but it is the exception rather than the rule.

Standard seat pitch on the CRJ900 is around 30-31 inches (76-79cm), which is typical for regional jets and acceptable for passengers under 180cm. Taller passengers will find it tight. Exit row seats offer more legroom and are worth requesting at check-in on longer regional hops.

Being a smaller aircraft, the CRJ900 does feel turbulence more than larger jets. However, the pilots of regional aircraft are highly experienced with local weather patterns and the aircraft itself is built to handle turbulence safely. Seats over the wing (rows 8-14) provide the most stable experience during rough air.
